Cross of Many Colors

On Calvary’s hill, far away, long ago
On a plain wooden cross many colors did show
Red brown and white from blood, flesh and bone
Stained the cross and he suffered alone.
Sweat stained hands left darker brown
As they slowly took that brutal cross down
And darker still the blood stained ground
From pierced side and thorny crown

You’re a God of many colors of the rainbow and beyond
God of colors we can hear and see and feel
You’re a God of many colors, which together form a bond
That will help a hurt and broken world to heal.

Later at the tomb other colors were spied
As the women ran breathless and the soldiers did hide
The stone black and gray, the linen cloth white
As dawn banished the purple of night.
In a room locked and barred fire colors came
The orange and red and yellow of the Spirit’s guiding flame
And they banished all shadows of doubt that remained
And the colors went forth to proclaim…

You’re a God of many colors of the rainbow and beyond
God of colors we can hear and see and feel
You’re a God of many colors, which together form a bond
That will help a hurt and broken world to heal.
