I remember the day you were born. You were pale and cold,
couldn't keep you warm
'Cause we were in that dark cave, Didn't have a place to stay.
You cried and I held you tight. So many people came and went that night.
Said they followed that star. Came from near and far.
And I loved you then, and I love you now.
I remember when you were twelve. We took that trip, you
were so grown up,
But then you ran away. My heart stopped that day.
We went back to Jerusalem. You were at the Temple, you were teaching them.
And I have to admit, I was proud, and just a little scared.
How my little boy could teach God's Holy Word.
And a mother's love never dies
It breaks her heart each time her baby cries.
And time may pass and the years run swiftly by
But this mother's love will never die.
I remember that wedding so fine. The poor groom, he'd run out of wine
But somehow I knew, that you could help.
Somehow I knew it was your time. You changed that water into wine
And you never told a soul But a mother knows.
And I loved you then, and I love you now.
I remember we came to take you away. I thought you were
sick, you'd been acting so strange.
They went and told you That you mother waited outside.
You looked at me, then you turned away. "Who is my mother?" that's what you
said.
And I didn't hear another word You'll never know, how much that hurt.
And a mother's love never dies
It breaks her heart each time her baby cries.
And time may pass and the years run swiftly by
But this mother's love will never die.
I remember standing on that terrible hill My son, they're
about to kill
And I felt each blow As if it were my own hands and feet.
They tried to give you vinegar to drink. They gambled for your clothing right
there at your feet.
I got so angry, I opened my mouth to yell, to shout.
But just then you opened your eyes You looked around, you caught my gaze.
Then you said to God, "Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.
And I loved you then, and I love you now.
I remember that joyous day. I'd run to the tomb, the stone was rolled away
And the soldiers were gone, But then, so were you.
Then you came and spoke to me. Your words were soft, my fears were relieved
But when I turned for a touch You had gone again.
But I loved you then, and I love you now.
And a mother's love never dies
It breaks her heart each time her baby cries.
And time may pass and the years run swiftly by
But this mother's love will never die.
I remember the day you were born.
